The Short Straw

This episode we go over Tyler Perry’s Straw, which is better than some of his other productions. Staring Taraji P. Henson, Sherri Shepard and Teyana Taylor, Straw will try to pull at your heart strings. Like most Tyler Perry films it features a Black woman going through it in some shape or form. That may be a toxic relationship, poverty, mental illness. She’s going to have big issues to overcome. Straw is no different. Taraji plays a single mom working 2 jobs caring for her small child who is ill, living in a one-bedroom apartment with no AC in the heart of Georgia in the middle of summer. She was sweaty the whole movie.

Teyana plays a detective trying to get to the bottom of what’s going on with Taraji who has found herself in a mess at the bank where Sherri works and plays the bank manager. This movie overall does show women working together to support each other through trails they are facing, which I liked about the movie. The men in this film were, I’ll say, less than understanding having little to no patience for Taraji’s character and dismissing her or berating her at every turn.

Overall this movie isn’t bad, it felt more complete than some of his other works. Maybe he got some help writing it. Maybe he wasn’t exhausted when he put it together, I’m not sure. But, it’s on Netflix if you want to watch it.
