8 scary movies for a horror night
I thought it would be fun to give you guys a scary movie list for Halloween or just for a creepy night at home. Here’s 8 movies worth watching that will fulfill scary movie night. These are in no particular order.
Grimcutty (Hulu)
Currently on Hulu this movie is unnerving. At first it comes off as another scared teen movie, but it picks up quick. The main character is a young teen trying to find herself outside of her parents’ vision for her life. It is clear they are concerned for her and her wellbeing, but things take a turn when the rumor of an online video is affecting students. It quickly escalates once Grimcutty is introduced and the jump scares are on point. What I enjoyed about the movie was that you get a good view of the creature early on in the movie. If you enjoy a psychological supernatural horror flick that doesn’t take the whole film to reveal what everyone is running from you will enjoy this.
Deliver us (Hulu)
This one went in a direction I wasn’t expecting. It gave me the Nun vibes, but it did not do anything of that. Although this movie does take place in a convent and a priest is assigned to make sure all is well. Deliver Us heads in another direction, focusing on prophecy, rituals a lot of visions while sleeping. I was surprised by the way the story unfolded, because I was expecting the majority of this movie to take place in the convent. It was refreshing to see the characters on a journey to stay alive.
Bring Her Back (HBO)
For those of you who want a demon movie with out the head spinning this may be the one for you. I believe this one is an A24 film, so you already have an idea of how its going to go. Bring Her Back follows two siblings dealing with trauma and loss. They find themselves living with a foster mom who seems a bit off. You quickly lean this woman has secrets and intentions for the siblings. There’s also another child living with her who seems to need “special attention.” Bring Her Back is a mix of psychological horror and supernatural horror. It does get gory, and you will find yourself uncomfortable as the movie unfolds.
The Elixir (Netflix)
For the zombie buffs out there, this one will full fill your craving. If you just want to watch zombies devouring people this movie will scratch that itch. That is all it can do. As far as storytelling it’s bad. You won’t like the characters, and you will be waiting impatiently for a turning point you won’t get. The effects of the zombies are good. I wished they had explored more about the zombies or the elixir, but you never get those answers. This movie is 2 hours long as well.
It Feeds (Hulu)
I wasn’t sure about this movie because my girl Alice from Twilight was the main character, I was coming off another movie she was in that didn’t make too much sense to me. But Ashley Greene did not let me down. She plays a mother and therapist using some sort of telepathic medium supernatural power to help her patients. She can see things others can’t but does her best to balance home life and work life with her daughter, but they seem to find themselves in a bind when a girl covered in burn scars comes in asking for help. This movie is entertaining; it feels a bit like Insidious mixed with The Cell.
Under Water (Hulu)
Kristen Steward loves to drop random movies when no one is looking. Under water is one of those sleeper movies you didn’t know you needed to see. Kristen is part of an underwater team based in the depths of the ocean. I don’t remember why they were down there but it’s not important. It’s one of those if it could go wrong it will. Her and the crew struggle to get to safety from 40 thousand leagues under the sea. This is a monster movie and it does play on the fears of the dark, cramp spaces and sea life.
Birth/Rebirth
I’ve talked about this movie briefly on the podcast and it’s added to my theory of scientist not having human empathy. This movie follows a woman working in the morgue of a hospital who is doing experiments in her home. When her experiments begin to leave the home is when the movie becomes problematic. It’s a creepy movie that has you wondering where is the line and in awe of the powers of the female body.
Welcome to Derry (HBO)
Although not technically a movie Welcome to Derry is straight out of the IT universe. This series is the prequel to the IT story by Stephen King. I don’t know what magic they used to make the characters jump out of the screen, but it is beautiful. They did an excellent job making this series feel just like the movies. At the time of this post there are only 2 episodes out now, but I would recommend this show for a scary night in.
