Year Of Me: Week 2
For the 2nd week of January I gave my hair some love. It has been so dry lately from the weather. (and me being lazy) so I gave myself a pre-poo/mayo mask. If you are not a natural you may not know what that means.
Pre-poo- is a step you take to prepare your hair for wash day. It's normally an oil of your choice and some water misted on the hair to loosen up the coils. It helps with detangling and removing shed hair that hasn't fully escaped the head. You can also use a conditioner if you want but anything with a good slip helps a lot. Aloe vera leaves are one of my favorite natural moisturizers to use. It's super hydrating, but also messy.
I used mayonnaise this time because it was what I had on hand. Mayo is mostly eggs and oil which adds protein to the hair, and it gives good slip.
I let that sit in my hair for a few hours under a shower cap to reduce the dripping down my neck and face. (Note: I did section my hair into 4 parts. Misting each section before applying the mayo). After that I washed it out with shampoo then conditioned it.
The results were hydrated soft hair. I do not do this every time it's wash day because it's time consuming but when I do my hair appreciates it. I am trying to prep my hair/myself for micro locs. My research has taught me that the hair should have as little product as possible applied to it during the early locking stages.
Being a recovering product junkie, this transition is going to be interesting. Especially because I’m coloring my hair, and colored hair needs all the moisture.
What did you do for yourself this week? Comment below and let me know.
