Great and Epic, like it should be

So let me tell you about these two books I stumbled across by accident. Now I enjoy a good novel, perfurably in the fanatsy/scifi genre. However, those are hard to come by with characters that look like me. A large majority of the time I just use my imagination and make most, if not all the characters people of color. At least until the author says something along the lines of skin the color of rice and even then I have some wiggle room because rice also comes in brown. But for the most part if I want a story that involves specifically Black people the story is always about some sort of pain, suffering, crime, suppression, and all the other too real sad stories that come from being Black in a America. So it was refreshing to stumble across these books.

The first is Children of Blood and Bone by Tomie Adeyemi. It's the first book of the Legacy of Orisha Series. Her second book Children of Virtue and Vengeance is scheduled to be released in December of this year so grab this one so you can be ready for the next. It follows the journey of a girl, Zelie and her brother Tzain on a quest that falls into their lap when they save and assist princess Amari with fleeing from her home. Little do they know the item shes carrying can flip the balance of power and change their world forever. This story takes off within the first few pages, I was far from bored and it drew me in instantly. I will say growing up I wasn't much of a reader, if I had access to a story like this when I was younger reading would have never been problem for me. Tomi Adeyemi did her thing writing this book. I am sooooooooo excited for the next book. I can't express enough how much I love this book. Her books can be found at Barnes and Nobles, Amazon, Books A Million and a few other sites.

The 2nd book by Marlon James is titled Black Leopard, Red Wolf. The first of the Dark Star Trilogy, this book took me some time to get used to. I listened to the audio book and the way it was read took me a while to get with the flow. The story is told through the perspective of the main character and it reads like he speaks. He is the only means of the narration in this book and for me, it took some getting used to. With that being said this story takes off like a bat out of hell, and hits you like a brick. It follows the story of Tracker, a man gifted with a nose that can smell for miles, and his adventure being persuaded to locate a boy who vanished three years ago. When I tell you this story is epic... I had no idea what I was getting myself into when I read the summary. Yes, I gave you the synopsis of what the book is about, but I didn't tell you what the book was about or how any of it happened. So much happens in this book I had to stop and regroup for a couple days, it gets crazy. I actually had to go back a few times just to make sure I had heard what I thought I heard. I would not recommend this book for the faint of heart or some young readers, because some parts get a bit disturbing.

I will say this, the time Marlon James took to bring this story to life is definitely shown through out this story. The details, the characters, all fit in this amazing, dangerous, mystical world. If you want epic I would say sit down read Black Leopard, Red Wolf. It hits all the check marks on an epic tale. Magic, mystical beings, brutal deaths, sex, love. Its got it all honestly. Black Leopard, Red Wolf can be found at Barnes and Nobles, Amazon, Books A Million and many more.
