My Sun Fighters
Hey hey, so last week the temperatures peaked at 112 degrees, which would be cool if I lived in Nevada. Also, as you all know I work outside so last week was a challenge. The year before I had to tap out from work mid day from heat exhaustion. I was dizzy and nauseous. My skin was patchy, I had stopped sweating, it wasn't good. My silly self was trying to finish the route with all the heat stress symptoms. My body almost shut down on the street, I had sat down on a stoop and could not move. I was contacting my sister and manager, my sister telling me to go home. My manager asking me if I can finish. It was a hot mess, literally. I didn't pass out but I remember how sick I felt. So with these high temperatures I was wary.
The good thing about new experiences is that you learn from them, and today I will give you a few tips on staying cool in high heat. When I was a new carrier I didn't know how to manage being in the heat. I was fortunate to be placed on a military base who had short routes so it wasn't that bad. However as time went on I learned from the professionals what to invest in.
1) A cooling towel- these lovely things are activated with water. They keep cool for a few hours before you have to add more water. They range between $4- $12 depending where you find them. Amazon has everything so I would start there. I bought mine from Boscovs for $4 on sale. Any sporting goods store would definitely have them. Or you can freeze a wet folded bandana. They keep pretty well when kept in a cooler. They will dry up on you so try to keep them damp.

2) A hat- I just bought an umbrella hat and I love it. If you have read my last post I have a picture of me in the hat during the rain. It's an actual umbrella so it works in the sun as well as the rain. For those super humid days when the rain coat is not an option. Again Amazon $15.
3) UV shirts/sleeves- I hate the semi permanent tee shirt tan, it's the worst. By the time my tan fades back to normal it's spring and the process is starting all over. The other thing is I don't always remember to reapply sun block, thus resulting in sun burn. I bought my sleeves on amazon for maybe $10.
4) Thermos- Any insulated container will work honestly. I have a thermos because I can put hot or cold liquids in it. It has saved my life in the winter with hot chocolate and cool in the summer with ice cold water.
5) WATER!- you can never have enough of it. Buy some water bottles and a Brita filter. I have 2 water bottles that I rotate every other day strictly for water. I freeze them and as they melt throughout the day I have ice cold water.
Those are the essentials for getting through the summer with an outside job. I'm sure there are a few other things I'm forgetting. But these are my must have top 5.
Stay hydrated this summer.
