Trips to the Shore: Part 1

Hello hello, thank you again for coming back and reading about my little adventures. So lets talk about this mini vacation I had this past week for the 4th of July. My sister and I planned a get away trip to Ocean City Maryland, since work and life had been kicking our butts and we just needed some down time. I had to work the 3rd so I told her I would just meet her down there. I didn't get finished work until 5:30pm that day so I didn't arrive to the hotel until closer to nine that night. Traffic wasn't bad considering the last time I made this trip I was trapped between rehoboth beach Delaware and Ocean City Maryland for a good 2 hours. The distance between the two beaches is an easy 15 min drive. They aren't far from each other but between traffic and the pouring rain that day I was stuck way longer then I needed to be. So for this ride down to be pretty smooth was a blessing. We pretty much relaxed that night. My sister ordered pizza and I crashed after that.

Day 1

We woke up pretty early, mainly from being programed to wake up for work, which is the worst. I understand now why elderly people are just up so early, they're just used to it after decades of just being up. The other reason was because our beds were extremely stiff. Hard, is the best word for it. For some reason this hotel thought it was a good idea to give their guests 10 little pillows. I don't understand why we had so many. These pillows were hard to arrange and they were short and thick so my neck hurt from being up too high, but without the pillow my head was on the mattress. It was unnecessary.

Day one started off as a beach day, after we grabbed some breakfast we trooped across the street to the beach. This was at maybe 10 AM in the morning. The heat outside was on super concentrate. The haze and fog covering the upper floors of the hotels around us should have been a sign that we should have packed more water. But no, we just knew there would be an ocean breeze. There's always an ocean breeze, we're by the ocean. It's science. No, this heat was suffocating. There was no wind, just sun and humidity. We weren't ready, it was like walking in an oven. We some how managed to set up camp with my beach tent and my cooler.

Now I'm from Jersey, our shores lay different then the shores of Maryland. Ocean City has a semi steep dip before you reach the water and then you go down some more to get into the water. Then there's another step in the water where the waves crash into the sand under the water. You can't see it so you just have to time it just right and try not to fall while the water is breaking or get knocked over by a wave. I almost drowned. The water was refreshing, aggressive, but refreshing. After about 2 hours of baking in the sun we packed up and headed back covered in sand and sunblock.

PSA: For those of you who don't bathe after playing in any type of outdoor water activities, whether it be the pool or the ocean. Ocean + Pool does NOT equal clean. Ocean + rinse off station does NOT equal clean. Pool + Hot tub does NOT equal clean. Please take a shower with soap and water and wash off all the sweat, sun block, sand, chlorine or anything else you may have swam through while being in the water. I remember being trapped in an elevator with a group of people who smelled like they hadn't bathed in days. Don't be those people. Again Pool + Ocean or Hot tub does NOT equal clean. That is all.

Once we recouped from the beach, we set off to grab some dinner. We took a Lyft to this wonderful restaurant called OCM Crabs. Our waitress was amazing, shout out to Pam for taking care of us. I'm not sure if it was just a special for the forth of July holiday or what but they had all you can eat crabs for $35. My sister had one goal for this trip and she was sold before Pam finished the sentence. Now these crabs weren't small, and they were soo delicious. The meat came out of crab so easily and the corn on the cob was so good!.... my life was changed. I thought we were doing ok with the first tray she brought out. We started out with a good dozen, maybe more. When she came back with a second tray that was piled twice has high as the first we knew we were in trouble. Again, these crabs weren't small. After ordering a pitcher of water we set off to conquer the now 30 crabs covering our table. At one point we debated sharing with our neighbors, it took some time but we managed to get it down to 2 small ones.

From there we headed down to the boardwalk to catch the fireworks. We caught the bus, which is $3 for an all day pass which is a pretty good deal. After camping out on a bench for a good 2 hours it was finally dark enough for the show to start. Though, I will say we found a pretty good spot to stop at because we witnessed a one man band who sang to us for a good portion of that wait time. After the show, my sister and I hung back a bit since we knew the masses were going to flood over to their cars and the bus stops. After about an hour we started to head back towards the bus stop knowing they were going to be packed. The problem was, all the buses were stuck on the other side of the street in traffic. So I had a semi brilliant idea to cross the street, catch the bus over there and just ride the loop until our stop. The only problem with that was again they were stuck in traffic and not moving at all.

My sister decides to call it and have someone pick us up. I kept checking Uber but they kept telling me no cars were available. My sister manages to get a Lyft driver but they are going the opposite way and then they have to some how fight their way down through traffic to get to us. It was pushing 11 PM by then, I'm older now so most of my late nights involve being at home near my bed. I'm pretty much over it and exhausted from being around crowds. Our Lyft driver finally drops off their passenger and starts his journey towards us. I can't express the joy I felt knowing I would be back in the room with the hard beds. When I tell you this man zigzagged through traffic like he was playing Crazy Taxi or Need for Speed. He went down some back roads and cut across 2 intersections to get to us. We watched all this happen on the app, so we knew this driver was about his business. What I didn't know was that this driver drove like this with people in the car.

He picked us up and I saw he drove a stick shift, which I always admire. I personally can't drive stick so it's always cool to watch someone drive a manual car. What's not cool is watching someone drive stick quickly in heavy traffic with fogged up windows. I swear this man was driving blind. Just switching lanes and using all the jet boosters to get us up the street. He was nice, and got us there safely. My nerves were shot, but we gave him a good tip and told him to be safe on the road.

That wraps up the first half of the trip. If you're ever in town please head over to OCM Crabs, again the food was amazing. You can find them at:
