Part 2: The Shire
The 2nd day wasn't as eventful as the first, we did a little shopping and walked the boardwalk in the day light. It wasn't until evening things got a little interesting. For dinner I had decided on this restaurant called Hooked, forgetting it was a Friday night on a holiday weekend. When we got there the hostess said the wait was going to be an hour and a half. Now it was 8:30 at night and they closed at 10. They were full to the brim with people and had a bunch of folks waiting outside for a table. The way she delivered the waiting time to me felt rude. She didn't say it in a rude way, but it felt like what she was actually saying was "we aren't going to seat you or your kind." Now, I may have read into that the way wrong. As a Black woman in America it's not something I haven't come across before. Lately it's been more often then not and I've become more aware of how people talk to me. With that being said, we didn't eat at Hooked. Again, I could have read that wrong and that could just be the way the hostess talks to people.
We had to scan the area for other restaurants through Google and The Hobbit Restaurant popped up. My sister called and asked about the wait time, they told her about an hour so we made a reservation and decided to kill time by walking down the street to this nice little gem called Three Anchors. We asked the hostess if they had bar seating and she told us about the bar upstairs if the one on the main floor looked too full. My sister headed to the bar upstairs since the main floor was crowded. When we got up there it wasn't as crowed. We stood for 5 minutes or so trying to get the bar tenders' attention. At one point another man who worked there stood in front of us to fiddle with one of the TVs. So we moved to the other side of the bar where there were less people. When the bar tender sees us he asks what we would like, not even mid sentence this man who is on the other side of me interrupts and says "Hey bud, can I get my beer?" The bar tender apologizes to us and him and gets our orders and does his thing.
The man next to me, who spoke over my sister proceeded to semi apologize for cutting her off. I say semi because, "Sorry for cutting you off earlier, but I mean. I was hear first and I HAD asked for another beer before you guys came. You know, I couldn't let him not get my beer you know?" followed by dry chuckling. We said it was fine, because men with alcohol in them can be dangerous and it wasn't that deep. We got our drinks and a lot of the chairs had emptied by then so we sat and sipped our wine, which was delicious. After about 20 mins of sipping wine and talking we hear a large crash of plates hit the floor thus prompting our not so sorry friend to yell "It was me! my bad guys!" I laughed a little at that, the wine was in full force by then and a lot of things were becoming funny. I had also pregamed a bit before we had left the room. For those who don't know what that means, it's when you start drinking before you get to your destination.
Without falling down the stairs we started back towards the restaurant. The Hobbit Restaurant wasn't what I thought it would be. From the title I thought it would be gimmicky. It was none of those things. In fact it was everything I wanted our last dinner in OC to be. Up scale, fine dinning, with the most gorgeous view of the bay. If I had known what it was before hand, I would have went sooner. Our waiter was great and the food was delicious. Although I got lost in translation, our waiter asked us if we were still eating the appetizer, what I actually heard was "can I take your plate?" so of course I said yes. We had 2 pieces of calamari on that plate, my sister looked at me like I was crazy. She asked me, "So....you're not done?..." And of course I look at her like what are you talking about? By then the waiter had left. After feeling simple and giving my sister a good chuckle our main coures showed up and they were perfect.
Even though the evening started off a bit rocky we had a lovely time. The day we had to head back home I decided on eating breakfast at a mom and pop restaurant called Dirty Harry's. It's a little small inside but the food was good. I got the cheese steak omelette with grits which was quite tasty. Their pastries are where it's at though. The bakery case was full of all the cakes and danishes. We opted for the cinnamon cake, which was a large cinnamon roll. I didn't get to eat it until I got home, which was a journey within itself.
If you've ever traveled with Google you know how it will reroute you if traffic is bad. Google had me on all the back roads in the back woods. I'm grateful the sun was up because if I had to do all of that in the dark I would have stopped somewhere and waited for the sun to come back up. It was kinda fun sight seeing and diving in the boonies. I only had one issue, and I didn't mean to cut that poor woman off at the light. But, she was going super slow and I didn't want to be caught in the middle of the street. My eyes also lied to me, I thought there were two lanes but it was just one and by then I had to put my car somewhere to not be in the way of on coming traffic. Either way no one died.
